The Economic Planning Principal Secretary James Muhati this morning chaired the Policy Steering Committee meeting on ending Teenage Pregnancy.

It was a meeting of key Principal Secretaries who have a stake in the campaign to end Teenage Pregnancy in the Country.
Adolescent pregnancy is considered a high risk for both the mother and baby and could also herald STIs and HIV infections. Said the PS.

While giving his remarks, the National Council for Population and Development Director General, Dr. Mohamed Sheikh stated that approximately 30 New HIV infections occur daily among young women aged between 15-24 years in Kenya.

He however pointed out that Kenya committed during the inauguration of ICPD25 in the Country to end Teenage Pregnancy by the year 2030 because the vice has adverse negative impact on the national economy.

On her part, the State Department for Public Health Standards and Professional Management Principal Secretary, Dr. Josephine Mburu stated that; “We cannot sit in a hotel and sort Teenage pregnancy.” She said that it was time we found out when the rain started beating us.

The State Departments represented during the meeting included Interior and National Administration, Gender and Affirmative Actions, The National Treasury, Basic Education, Youth Affairs, Culture and Heritage and Immigration and Citizen Services.
