Deputy President, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua briefed on the preparation of 2024 Kenya’s Voluntary National Review on the implementation of SDGs

Economic Planning, PS James Muhati attended the Development Partner Coordination: Inaugural Government Policy Level Meeting today, 17th April 2024 in Karen Nairobi.

During the Strategic Meeting on UN Kenya’s 2023 Results and 2024 Outlook convened by H.E the Deputy President, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, at his Karen Residence, the PS apprised H.E and the Development Partners present on the Preparations towards Kenya’s National Voluntary Review(VNR)on SDGs in 2024.

The PS pointed out that Kenya is on track in preparation of the 2024 VNR in line with the road map provided in the handbook for the preparation of the VNRs and will be submitted to the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs within the set timelines.

The PS explained that the VNR is a follow up mechanism that allows countries to voluntarily review and report on their progress towards the implementation of the SDGs. The PS noted that the 2024 VNR will be Kenya’s third VNR to be presented at the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF).The first and second were presented in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

The PS also informed the meeting that MTP IV, launched on 24th March 2024 will be the last Five-Year Medium Plan for the Kenya Vison 2030. The plan is aligned with the BETA priorities and will be tracked through the National Reporting Indicator Handbook launched on the same day.

In his conclusion, he affirmed that Kenya remains committed towards the implementation of the SDGs and has put in place the necessary institutional framework and structures to support Kenya’s efforts towards achieving the SDGs by 2030.

The objective of the meeting was to brief the Deputy President on results achieved in 2023 through UN Kenya support and the 2024 outlook and also update the Deputy President on preparation of 2024 Kenya’s Voluntary National Review on the implementation of SDGs.

Present were Deputy President, CS Environment, AG, several PSs, UN Resident Coordinator, various UN Heads of Agencies, Director and Chief Economists, International Framework Coordination Division among others.
