The Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Targeted Review Report Launch for Sierra Leone
The Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Targeted Review Report Launch for Sierra Leone got underway today in Freetown ,Sierra Leone. The Chief Administrative Secretary National Treasury and Planning, Eric Simiyu Wafukho is leading the Kenya delegation at the Launch.
Apart from the Sierra Leone Cabinet and other Government officials , other guests include delegations from APRM Secretariat led by Ambassador Inonge Mbikusia-Lewanika ,the APRM Panel Member in charge of Sierra Leone; Mrs. Janet Mabwa, Head of Targeted Review Unit at APRM Continental Secretariat; Ambassador Samora Okwiya the CEO of NEPAD/APRM Kenya CEO and Winnefred Asare, Acting Executive Secretary for APRM Ghana National Governing Council.
Various presentations were made today highlighting success stories and lessons learnt by Sierra Leone and other African countries on the Targeted Review. The countries that shared their experiences today from undertaking similar reviews included Sierra Leone, Ghana, Senegal, Zambia, Namibia and Mozambique.
Highlights from the meeting include: Lessons learnt and experience gained from handling Ebola helped in shaping the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic; the covid-19 response leveraged on local support structures and indegenous knowledge systems that were used in the fight against Ebola ; the government put in place strategies to ensure that other disease burdens on the nation were not neglected in the fight against covid-19 but are also given the attention that they deserved.
Other highlights include the manner in which the government brought together the political class ,religious leaders ,business community and civil society to face covid-19 pandemic as a united nation faced by one adversary; mobilising Diaspora to use their influence , time and treasure in addressing the disease challenge; pursuing a twin-track approach of both saving lives and protecting livelihoods in designing covid-19 pandemic containment solutions; engaging youth and deploying them as change champions and dessimators; investing heavily in the healthcare system as government and letting Africa to tell her own story to the world through the APRM platform.
